Owen Roizman

Five Academy Award nominations across a career that helped define the visual grammar of 1970s American cinema. On The French Connection, Roizman worked in the available light beneath the elevated tracks without supplementing it — not because he chose minimalism as a style, but because supplementing it would have been impossible. The result was exactly right.
